Warley V Blackley 9th August

The final league game of the season saw Warley comfortably overcome Blackley and bring to an end two consecutive defeats which threatened to take the gloss of what has been a good season.
Defeat last week away to Outlane when we had between 7 and 9 players, depending on what stage the game was at and more importantly the defeat the week previously to title contenders SBCI had left the lads a little bit flat, so it was important to end the season in style before the Cup Final on Monday 30th August.

Greg lost the toss yet again and Blackley opted to bat first. Ricey and Greg opened the bowling, with Blackley’s opener soon on his way back to the pavilion having had his off stump knocked back by Greg. Ricey bowled with pace but without taking a wicket and a double change brought Liam and James Sweeney into the attack. Sweeeny picked up a wicket and then Greg began to ring the changes and ensure everyone had a bowl.

Jimmy and Raufy picked up a couple of wickets each, with Hamish and Callum also deservedly getting a wicket each.

A first bowl for Sam Clayton for the 17’s and he showed great potential for the future and to finish proceedings, a cameo bowling performance from Dom Oates who was unlucky not to pick up a wicket when Greg spilled a chance at long on; Blackley finishing their innings on 89.

In the absence of Ben Atkinson, Dom reverted to his opening berth with Greg and set about chasing down the Blackley total.
Dom rushed to 11 off 6 balls whilst Greg was scratching around at the other end, struggling with his timing, amongst other things.
Dom was still showing more intent when he fell to a quicker delivery that got through his defence to flatted his off stump;, the moment being caught on video but soon to be erased, so Dom tells me! Minky strode to the crease on the back of a 50 with the Sunday side and he and Greg never looked in any danger in knocking off the required runs.
Greg finished on 42 not out and Minky 20 not out to win with 4 overs to spare.
Special mentions go to Dom, James Sweeney and Greg as they played their last league game for the 17’s.
All 3 have been a pleasure to work with and are a credit to the cricket club and to their family. I hope they can round their 17’s career with a win in the Cup Final.

See you all on Monday 30th at Illingworth; match starts at 4.00pm. back to top

Blackley V Warley

WARLEY VICTORIOUS

Warley’s Under 17’s continued with their steady progress in the league with a victory against an under strength Blackley outfit who were missing a number of key players.

Warley were forced into one change from last week, with Daniel Leonard making his Under 17 debut replacing the injured Waqas.

Greg Keywood won the toss on a murky evening and asked Blackley to bat first in a game reduced to 18 overs per side to ensure the side batting second were able to do so in reasonable light.

Warley’s opening bowlers, Greg Keywood and Jack Rice struggled to find a consistent line and length early on and didn’t put the Blackley openers under too much pressure, enabling them to get off to a steady start.

Greg was replaced after 2 overs by James Sweeney, who like Greg, also struggled with his line and length but bowled reasonably tight.

Another change in the attack saw Jack Rice replaced by Liam Keywood (still sporting his pot) and this resulted in the first wicket of the evening. Liam found a good rhythm from the off and produced a beauty to get rid of the opener with a well held catch for Minky behind the stumps. Two more wickets soon fell to Liam to enable Warley to take the upper hand and allow the unsung heroes of the 17’s to play their part.

Into the attack came Junior Jimmy, replacing James Sweeney and Hamish replaced Liam after his impressive spell.
Despite Jimmy being hit for a massive six, he held his nerve and the very next delivery got his revenge and claimed his wicket.
At the other end Hamish bowled a tidy spell, taking a wicket in his first over and then in the final over of the game claimed a second wicket following a magnificent catch from Junior Jimmy. Callum managed one over and was unlucky not to pick up a wicket as Warley eventually dismissed the opposition for 87.
An impressive performance in the field with some good ground fielding, skipper Keywood claiming two catches and debutant Danny looking solid in the outfield.

GREG KEYWOOD 2-0-10-0
JACK RICE 4-2-13-0
JAMES SWEENEY 4-0-16-0
LIAM KEYWOOD 3-1-7-3
JUNIOR JIMMY 2-0-16-1
HAMISH AINSLEY 2-0-8-2
CALLUM BOWMER 1-0-11-0

As per last week Warley opened up with Ben Atkinson and Greg Keywood at the top of the order.
The plan was for Ben and Greg to give us a solid start, Dom to come in and nudge it around and then let debutant Daniel Leonard come in and hit the winning runs. Let’s try Plan B instead then!

0 for 1 after 4 balls with Greg back in the dressing room trying to pull a ball in the first over without having got used to the pace of the wicket or the bowler! When will you learn?!

Ben soon followed having made 12, not getting forward far enough to a delivery that he should have played comfortably on the front foot and was bowled. This saw the introduction of Daniel Leonard to the crease but not in ideal circumstances. Daniel was then subjected to some hostile bowling from Blackley’s two lively openers. Daniel was hit on the helmet first ball (ouch!) and then having got off the mark was then given a beamer before eventually getting caught fending another delivery off his nose end!
Daniel showed a great deal of courage in sticking it out and hopefully I haven’t pit him off playing cricket all together, well done Daniel.
At the other end whilst all this was going on, Dom was played another assured innings and with the back in-form Minky took Warley comfortably towards the required total.
Dom eventually perished for a well made 38, leaving Minky and Liam Keywood to see Warley home. Minky finished on 11 not out, Liam on 7 not out.
Another 4 points in the bag in our attempt to stay in touch with SBCI at the top of the table. Four games left; win all four and we have a great chance of winning the league; next fixture, home to Stones 19th July.

Well done boys. back to top

Collinson Cup semi-final. 5th July Warley v Barkisland

WARLEY MARCH ON! Warley’s Under 17’s progressed to their second successive Collinson Cup Final after an enthralling battle at Paradise Lane this evening after disposing of Huddersfield League opposition Barkisland.

Skipper Greg Keywood lost the toss (again) and Barkisland elected to bat first on a wearing wicket.
Barkisland’s openers got off to a flying start, with the impressive Westbrook (his opinion, not mine) hitting some lusty blows and racing to 30 in no time.
His opening partner, Vine, was not so prolific and was beaten by Jack Rice with one that nipped back to comprehensively bowl him.
Heptinstall entered the fray at number 3 and despite Warley’s coach insisting that Greg Keywood came out of the attack after receiving some rough treatment from Westbrook, he stayed on and soon accounted for Heptinstall who was beaten all ends up for pace and bowled without troubling the scorers (shows watch the coach knows).
A double bowling change saw the introduction of James Sweeney and Waqas Ali in an attempt to stem the flow of runs.
Waqas was a little unfortunate not to pick up more wickets with his cunning left arm spin and was removed from the attack after two overs; the impressive Sweeney however bowled his full allocation of 5 overs and was Warley’s most effective bowler.
His tally would have been even more impressive had he not spilled a couple of really sharp caught and bowled opportunities and during his spell he managed to restrict the free scoring Westbrook who eventually retired having made 50 to rapturous applause!?
Liam Keywood replaced Waqas at the Maypole end (pot and all) and bowled an impressive 3 over spell in the midst of some cultured hitting from EJ (I think he has cricketing turrets) and was unlucky to drop a sharp caught and bowled chance, with Liam refusing to blame his pot!
The final two overs were shared by the returning openers Greg Keywood and Jack Rice and Barkisland’s innings closed on an imposing 135 from their 20 overs.
Overall, this was probably around 40 less than the total looked like being at one stage and Warley’s bowlers managed to rein the total in during the final few overs.
Some good sharp fielding from the young lads, Callum, Little Jimmy and Hamish (who took a smart catch off Waqas) and some tidy wicket keeping from Minky helped keep the score down to a total that could be chased down with the correct application.

GREG KEYWOOD 5-0-40-1
JACK RICE 5-0-30-1
JAMES SWEENEY 5-0-26-1
LIAM KEYWOOD 3-0-18-0
WAQAS ALI 2-0-16-1

In a change to the usual batting line up, Warley opened up with Ben Atkinson and Greg Keywood at the top of the order.
The steady start requested in the dressing room was soon undone by Westbrook, who accounted for Ben with a yorker that lifted young Ben off his feet; not content with that Westbrook still had to have a word with the departing Atkinson, 8 for 1 after 3 overs.
This brought Dom Oates to the crease and a partnership developed between the two which ultimately would seal the fate of the game.
Keywood set about the Barkisland attack in a controlled manner, receiving great support from Oates at the other end.
Greg then seemed to “moor up” once he approached 40 and at this stage Dom became the aggressor. The rate required was still around 7 an over but sensible batting, along with good running between the wickets meant that the chase was still on.
Keywood reached his 50 with a four, taking his total to 52 and then duly retired having shared in a 100 run partnership, leaving younger brother Liam to join Dom at the crease.
Again the pair batted sensibly (couple of scary moments with the running between the wickets) but Liam steadied nerves with a 4 off the final ball of the penultimate over, leaving 2 to win from the final over.
Dom coolly lofted the first ball of the final over for four, crashing the ball over mid on for the winning runs, to leave Dominic on 48 not out; possibly his best and most important innings for the club.
Liam Keywood was 9 not out at the close.
In the end a comfortable win, with 5 balls to spare and plenty of batting left in the tent! To the victor the spoils, to the losers, well, in the words of their captain, let’s just say “thanks for coming”.
Well done lads, a great all round effort back to top
