Despite losing to a very strong
Barkisland side, the Warley Under 11s were very grateful to get
their game in considering how much rain had fallen the day before.
Barkisland started scoring quite quickly from the start and it
wasn’t a surprise to see both openers E Fraine and J Finch both
retiring once they reached 25. They played several good shots all
around the ground.
The boys new it was going to be
difficult and concentrated hard on having fun and giving it their
best. Each one of them bowled 2 overs and it was Sam Senior on
debut who took the 1st wicket of the evening when Kamrin
Mohammed took a neat catch. It was the 15th over of the
innings so you could say it was a little overdue or Raws should have
got him on a bit sooner!
Megan Healey had some difficulties
in her 1st over and was struggling with her confidence
when it came for her turn again. She wasn’t keen and after some
words of encouragement from Raws she gave it a go. Much to all her
team mates delight she clean bowled J Wheldale. It was fantastic to
watch all her team mates run to her giving her ‘high 5s’. 2 wickets
in 2 overs, we were on a roll now! The Barkisland players continued
to play some good shots and ended up scoring 111 for 3. The 3rd
wicket came along in the final over when Max Rawson (mini me) bowled
a straight one that S Moore missed and he was clean bowled.
During the 1st innings
the team had stuck to their task well and just enjoyed playing and
taking part which was exactly what Raws had asked them to do. The
lessons to be learned from the 1st innings when we were
fielding were :-
1.
Make sure you have
your shirt tucked in as Raws doesn’t like it - “look good, feel
good, play good” or “look sloppy, feel sloppy, play sloppy”
2.
Always be walking in
when the bowler is running up.
3.
Expect the ball to
come to you at all times.
4.
Get behind the ball
with the “long barrier” whenever you can. Dive or stop it with your
foot if you have to but watch the ball all the way.
5.
Concentrate when you
are bowling, relax and don’t rush.
6.
Remember to use your
leading arm to aim where you are going to bowl the ball. We had 12
wides on Monday night so it is something we need to work at on
Friday nights.
When it came to our turn to bat
Calum Bowmer and Kamrin Mohammed struggled for several overs against
some very straight bowling by the Barkisland bowlers. The batsmen
had been instructed to keep out the good balls on the stumps and
there were a lot of those. Even when they bowled a ball slightly
wide of the stumps neither Kamrin or Calum were able to hit it, I
think they might have been trying a bit too hard. Kamrin was first
out when the ball just clipped the bails. He was out for 6 in the
11th so it had been a great struggle.
After a long wait to bat, sadly
Adam Healey missed the next ball and was bowled. It was a sad way
for this to end Adam’s contribution as he had done an excellent job
as wicket keeper.
Captain Calum Bowmer played a good
innings which included 5 fours. They all seemed to be scored with
the same shot which Calum had some difficulty with during his
innings. A combination of taking his eye off the ball and trying to
hit it too hard was the conclusion drawn by Raws. It was an innings
to be proud of though and Calum should be congratulated on his
patience of getting to 25 and he enjoyed the noisy welcome he
received from the spectators and his team mates when he came off the
field. At the end of the season it will be interesting to see how
many players score 25 against this excellent team. Well done Calum!
Sam Clayton was out next when he
was caught for 4 with just over 5 overs to go so we were 50 for 3.
This meant that the “Senior
brothers” were batting together. Jack smashed 3 fours in one over
so we ended up scoring 75 for 3 when the overs ran out. Jack played
with great confidence and obviously has an eye for a ball as he
showed with those terrific boundaries. As for his calling and
running between the wickets? We are not so sure on that one. It was
more like the “chuckle brothers” at one point.
The lessons to be learned from the
2nd innings when we were batting were :-
1.
Make sure you have
your shirt tucked in as Raws doesn’t like it - “look good, feel
good, play good” or “look sloppy, feel sloppy, play sloppy”
2.
Always keep your eye
on the ball and watch it right on to the bat.
3.
Be positive whether
you are playing a defensive or attacking shot..
4.
Call nice and loud.
“Yes”, “NO”, or “WAIT” Don’t call “GO” as you get confused with “NO”
5.
Run quickly and run
your bat into the crease at the end of a run.
Barkisland were a good team and
they played very well. The Warley team tried their best and
remembered Raws’s number one rule when he is running the team “TO
HAVE FUN!”.
Next Monday night we are playing
away at Augustinians in the cup. All spectators and parents are
most welcome to come and join us having fun!
