SHELF v WARLEYCOLLINSIN CUP 2nd
ROUND 4th JUNE
WARLEY PROGRESS IN CUP THRILLER
Warley progressed through to the
quarter final of the Collinson Cup after a nail biting thriller away
to Shelf.
Skipper Greg Keywood won the toss
and elected to bat first and some wayward short pitched bowling was
dispatched by a confident looking Dom Oates. His junior opening
partner, Ben Atkinson perished early doors for 7 after failing to
get on top of yet another short ball and was caught at cover.
This brought the skipper to the
crease who, despite being in good form of late with both the 2nd
team and Sunday side, failed to inflict much damage on the Shelf
attack and fell for just 12; he too failing to get over a ball and
offered a gentle catch to cover.
Dom was joined at the crease by the
unpredictable Shazad but failed to build a stand of any sorts as Dom
and everyone else in the ground was surprised by a full length
delivery (the first of the match!) and lost his off stump for a
patient 16.
In strode “Smiler” and with Shazad
set about laying a platform to build a reasonable total to defend.
Both batted with great
determination and conviction until Shazad fell for 21, leaving Liam
and Kieron Rodger on debut, to close out the innings on 95 for 4,
with young Keywood on 22 not out and Kieron on 5 not out.
Liam’s innings of 22 contained just
one boundary, which demonstrates the great level of patience he
showed. Older players take note!!
Warley’s opening bowlers failed to
make a breakthrough; Greg Keywood bowled with good pace and accuracy
but without luck and his first 3 overs yielded just 13 runs.
Shazad at the other end was wayward
and after two overs was replaced by Irfan who produced a stunning
spell of 4 for 16 from his 4 overs to put Warley in the driving
seat, however a fine innings of 29 from Burns turned things back
Shelf’s way.
Skipper Keywood brought back Shazad
for a second spell which again lacked direction and he went for 9
runs in his 2 overs.
Options were running out, as the
other wicket taker Liam Turner had bowled out taking 2 for 28 in his
four overs, so with four overs to go he turned to the swing of
Kieron Rodger.
Shelf had edged their way towards
victory but in his first over Kieron produced an absolute belter of
a delivery, swinging in and then hitting the seam and going up the
hill to clip the top of off stump to dismiss a bewildered Marshall.
At the other end Keywood bowled an
excellent maiden, leaving Shelf requiring 3 runs from 2 overs with
the last pair at the crease.
Up stepped Kieron again, bowling to
the dangerous Ilyas who had plundered a massive six earlier of Liam
Turner.
The first four balls were “on the
money” and offered nothing for the batsman to get hold of and then,
with the batsman advancing down the wicket to the 5th
ball of the over, Kieron produced another tremendous inswinging
delivery which took out Ilyas’s off stump to clinch the game with 7
balls remaining and with two runs to spare; a breathtaking
performance and a well deserved victory for the Warley boys.
Local rivals SBCI stand in the way
in the quarter finals in what promises to be a difficult tie; next
in the league we face Jer Lane at home on Wednesday in an attempt to
get what has been a stop start campaign due to weather back on the
road.
Well done boys.
