Warley vs Bradshaw 13/06/11 Match Reports
Under 17's Team Match Reports
2008
14th July v
Illingworth Home – League
Depleted of several of the ‘older’
players, namely Chris Atkinson, Luke Duckitt, Reece Uttley, Marcus
Benson and the Sowerby bound (when he pays his subs) Coe Byrne, the
younger end of the club were drafted in. Ben Atkinson, Mattie
Whitworth, Liam Keywood, Yasser Hussain and Brad Sutcliffe all
stepped up.
Illingworth also had their
problems, fielding only 9 men and batting only 8, however their side
were all of the age group.
Niall Lockley a Yorkshire junior
player opened the batting, and after a quiet start, due to some
tight bowling from Greg Keywood and particularly Shazad Hassan, he
then opened his shoulders to score a fine 55 runs before retiring.
The visitors looked set for a big
total, Stephen Cook adding 33 runs, but Warley kept ‘chipping away’
and the wickets began to fall at regular intervals.
Shazad, James Cooper and a run out
accounted for the first 3 wickets, Brad Sutcliffe taking 2 catches
and was also responsible for the run out, before Liam Keywood came
on to put in a short but very effective spell.
Obviously spurred on by his fathers
8 wicket haul at the weekend, and his brothers impressive batting in
the Crossley Shield semi-final the previous day, Liam was determined
to show that the youngest Keywood had much to offer as well.
His figures of 3 wickets for a
miserly 4 runs demonstrated this, and successfully ended the
Illingworth’s innings for a total of 119 runs.
Warley opened up with Dom Oates and
Jack Pulley, a partnership which had realised a century in the last
game and the home sides hopes were pinned on these two getting a
good start.
Unfortunately it wasn’t to be this
time, both were back in the hut with just over 20 on the board.
Greg Keywood and James Cooper (both
perhaps a little bit hungover from the celebrations of reaching the
Crossley Shield Final yesterday) began to repair the damage. It
looked promising as they added 35 runs before skipper Cooper was
dismissed. Greg now in full flow was out to a tremendous caught and
bowled by Ben Robertshaw for 34 runs.
It looked grim when Chinky
Whitworth and Yasser Hussain were out quickly, when Ben Atkinson
joined Shazad at the crease, who was already producing some good
shots..
Together, they stood tall and put
on a partnership of quality which belied their relative
inexperience.
Keeping the scoreboard moving along
with some good running and the occasional boundary, all of a sudden
it looked possible to overcome the Illingworth total.
Going into the last over still
needing 8 to win, victory was achieved with one ball to spare when
Shazad lifted a ball over the field to the boundary, ending his
innings 41 not out and Ben 15 not out at the other end, a stand of
50.
This was a superb effort by all of
the lads, talk about rising to the occasion, ending 3 fantastic days
of cricket for the Warley club, and demonstrating that there is a
lot of talent emerging.

June v Clayton Home – League
Clayton arrived without an umpire,
so Warley manager Howard Cooper had to join home umpire Dave Bleasby
to officiate from the middle, which just about summed up the
visitors attitude and discipline, their captain been very noticeable
by his vocal comments and lack of grammar.
Captain James Cooper and
vice-captain Chris Atkinson were both absentees due to holidays,
Shabaz Ali was unavailable, leaving room for Shazad Hassan to return
and up stepped Brad Sutcliffe and Liam Keywood two of the promising
younger junior players.
Liam had the opportunity to play
under the captaincy of his older brother Greg, fresh from a very
impressive display the day before against Clayton in the Crossley
Shield.
Winning the toss and electing to
bat, openers Jack Pulley and Dom Oates soon set about the bowling
and achieved a fine century partnership, Pulley with one of his less
impressive innings still managed to retire on 50, not a bad effort
when a little out of touch.
Oates then had to watch as Greg
Keywood and Luke Duckitt departed fairly quickly, but he remained
composed to carry on and took his score to 48, just 2 short of what
would have been a deserved half-century.
Extras mounted despite some keen
Clayton fielding, but the bowling was wayward and the sundries
column reached 25 (3rd highest scorer).
Reece Uttley, Coe Byrne and Chinky
Whitworth threw the bat and the innings closed at 145 for 4.
Chasing a challenging score the
visitors could not have made a worse start; Luke Duckitt’s pace was
just too much! From his first ball, which he took a wicket caught
and bowled, followed up by another wicket in the same over, an
uphill struggle for Clayton was an understatement.
Greg Keywood opening from the other
end chipped in with a wicket, then bowling changes regularly took
place, but the outcome was much the same.
Duckitt finished with 3 wkts for 1
run, Shazad Hassan’s figures were exactly the same, Marcus Benson
had 2 for 1, and off spinner Chinky bowling a good length and line
with a lot of variation took a deserved wicket.
Clayton were all out for 32, and
Warley were winners by 113 runs in a totally one-sided game.
However, the visitors must have
felt hard done by, as their captain was still questioning decisions
after the game despite the margin of defeat, and one of their middle
order batsmen ‘booted’ the stumps over after being bowled, good
effort lads!
Their attitude was not surprising
though, as their manager who arrived without an umpire disappeared
straight after the game without offering any appreciation of Warley
officials helping out. Good effort lad!!

9th June v Northowram Away –
Collinson Cup 2nd round
Drawn away to a strong Northowram
side for the 2nd year running in the Cup competition,
Warley under 17’s were hoping to repeat their success of a year ago.
Northowram won the toss and
elected to bat.
Openers Richard Moore and Adam
Stocks, both young players with 1st team experience,
faced the opening attack of Luke Duckitt and Greg Keywood.
It wasn’t long before Stocks
suffered the same fate as the previous years cup clash, by having
his stumps dismantled by Duckitt’s first ball to him.
Sam Gardener another first team
player joined his captain Moore at the crease, both players punished
any loose bowling and they both went onto score very good unbeaten
half centuries before having to retire.
The score continued to escalate,
aided by some poor Warley fielding, Jack Moon and Mattie Smith for
Northowram carried on the good progress and the interval score ended
up an impressive 161 runs.
Tall order for Warley to progress
to the next round.
Chris Atkinson and Jack Pulley set
about closing the deficit, and were making good progress before
Pulley departed.
Wickets fell, but Luke Duckitt and
Chris Atkinson were determined and their stand neared 100, the
feature being the running between the wickets.
Warley looked to be in with an
outside chance, when both Atkinson and Duckitt had to retire their
innings after reaching the personal milestone of 50 runs each.
However, th chase was just too much
and the innings ended up at 145, 16 short.
2nd June v
Mytholmroyd Away
After the rain of the previous
day, the Warley U17’s travelled down the valley to meet Mytholmroyd
and had the rare pleasure of a centrally placed first team wicket.
Put into bat, the usual opening
pair of Chris Atkinson and Dominic Oates faced one of the rising
stars of the Halifax League in opening bowler Jack Earle. However it
was not Earle who broke the opening stand, but a mix-up or lack of
communication when Oates was left stranded in the middle of the
wicket. Jack Pulley joined Atkinson and although the pair were
really troubled in keeping their wicket intact, found scoring
quickly a difficult task. Pulley skied a catch to mid-wicket for 18
runs just as he looked likely to get going, Greg Keywood fresh from
his recent batting successes with the senior sides tried to move
events along, but went quickly for 2.
In an effort to force the total
into 3 figures, Luke Duckitt was sent in and he and Atkinson moved
the score along more freely, before Chris trying to flick one
through the leg side was bowled for a good 44 runs. Reece Uttley was
next to bat, only to have one ball of the innings left and he was
run out for 1 whilst attempting an unlikely second, Duckitt
remaining unbeaten on 18 as the innings ended at 98 for 5
from the 20 overs allowed.
All the batsman were a little
guilty of trying to ‘smash’ the ball in trying to up the run rate,
when the tactic of keeping the scoreboard ‘ticking’ over and taking
one and two’s and waiting for the bad ball might have been more
fruitful.
Warley got the perfect start when
taking the field, dismissing the home sides openers with out a run
on the board, first a run out followed by Luke Duckitt clean bowling
the Mytholmroyd batsman.
The early wickets brought the
Mytholmroyd ‘stars’ Spencer Harris and Jack Earle together, and they
turned things around fairly quickly, despite some good bowling from
Greg Keywood and Luke Duckitt. Reece Uttley and James Cooper came
into the attack, only for Harris and Earle to increase the score
fairly rapidly. However, it was these 2 who made the breakthrough,
Uttley bowling and skipper James Cooper taking a one-handed wonder
catch to dismiss Harris.
Earle stood firm as the Mytholmroyd
middle order somehow scraped some runs together, courtesy of a few
‘Chinese cuts’ and one or two other unorthodox shots.
Chris Atkinson was brought on to
bowl for the first time this season and he repaid the compliment by
having Earle caught out to a good catch by Uttley.
Greg Keywood made use of his last
allotted over by taking 2 more wickets to set up a nail biting last
over decider.
Unfortunately a couple of sharp
chances went down and so did the visitors with Mytholmroyd ending at
99 for 7 with 3 balls left.
Greg Keywood’s 3 for 17 off 5 overs
was the pick of the bowlers.

Warley v Shelf 19th
May
Warley’s talented under 17’s proved
to be far too strong for Shelf in a one sided contest. Skipper James
Cooper won the toss and elected to bat first and his decision looked
good with both openers, Chris Atkinson and Dominic Oates dispatching
the ball to all parts from some wayward Shelf bowling.
Chris Atkinson retired, his 50
included 9 boundaries and then Dom Oates perished trying to force
the pace, his 38 containing 6 boundaries.
Jack Pulley maintained the
momentum, his 33 included a six and 6 fours and the innings closed
on an impressive 143 for 3.
Warley’s opening attack of Luke
Duckitt and Greg Keywood bowled with pace but failed to make the
breakthrough, Keywood was particularly unlucky, finding both the
inside and outside edge of Shelf’s opening batsmen.
The first change in the bowling
attack paid instant dividends. Marcus Benson replacing Duckitt at
the school end bowled an impressive four over spell, producing
figures of 4 – 10 from 4 nagging accurate overs of seam bowling and
he and skipper James Cooper ripped out the top order; James Cooper
returning figures of 3 – 14 from three overs.
With the damage done, Cooper
introduced Shazad Hassan from the school end and he duly finished
off the job, taking a remarkable 3 – 4 from 1.3 overs, two of the
runs conceded coming from wides!!
A minor incident to report; towards
the end of Warley’s innings, a small child was found hiding in Jack
Pulley’s bag!!
The incident has been reported to
the relevant authorities in an attempt to discover where this
illegal immigrant came from!!
Pulley beware, this could be the
start of something; remember, always check your bag!!
Well done lads.
