Third Team Match Reports 2008

Lightcliffe V Warley 03/08/08

Warley went to Lightcliffe for one of them great 10am starts we always love, with showers in the air and a 30 over game we needed to get points on the board, and without a full 11 at the ground (cheers bob) at the time of the toss, Big G won the toss and batted, he opened with himself and Greg “Kev” Keywood, Points are at a premium so a quick started was needed and after 10 overs Warley were 56-0 Keywood dismissive of anything on his pads, especially off the spinner hitting 2 or 3 massive 6’s.

Keywood fell with the score on 80 with 48 caught behind off a bowler with hair like a budgie, this brought in Ben Atkinson with 13 overs left, and Big G put his foot to the floor and took the score up to 104 and his personal score up to 50 when he took one risk to many and skied a catch which was caught by Glenn Chapple’s fat son, who took the catch and told Big G to go forth and multiply. Very nice of him.

The innings ended with Warley getting 144-5 off 28 overs, (off for rain) which was good.

Kev was given a choice of ends, and he decided he wanted to come down the hill, and he enjoyed that, bowling with pace and bounce for his 5 overs, taking 2 wickets, an excellent catch down the leg side from the Warley Dusty Bin DJ Brearley and a smart catch by James Whitworth at square leg, big g moved him there from point as with the returning Jonesy and chinky in the off side, keeping it tight and Big G and Boycs on the leg side looking like a couple of cows in the next field and it paid dividends.

There was a wicket for Brad also, who opened at the other end. And Jonesy came on for his first bowl in years, and his shoulder creaked more than Big G’s back! However, with Shuqi and Jonesy, boundaries started to flow and Lightcliffe with in the game, and then off came Jonesy and on came Chinky who bowled 6-1-26-2 and he bowled with intelligence and skill, very impressive. And with Shuqi getting a couple of wickets and Gregg, returning to polish the game off to claim 5 wickets, the game was won and the points were ours.

 The great escape has begun!!!!!

 Warley V Blackley 27/07/08

The sun was out, the sky was blue, there was not a cloud to spoil the view, but it was raining in Big G’s heart as personal issues had prevented the skipper being present at the toss, however, The pit bull, Dave Womersley was present and on a hot glorious day, he lost the toss and we fielded, well done dave!

Hiney and Shuqi were given the new cherry, and Shuqi struck with a controversial decision, given out caught behind by Brad Sutcliffe off the bowling of Shuqster with 7 on the board, the batsmen was very disgruntled, he claimed he was nowhere near the ball, then he said it was bat on pad and then he said it was ball on foot……….make your mind up lad (but keep the skirt on, buck fizz joke for you there).

Anyway, the wicket was true and flat and with no help in the air, and butters all over the fielders fingers, their number 3 survived 6 or 7 drops on his way to a hundred, and the other opener got 70 odd, both helping themselves on a friendly wicket, and some friendlier bowling from Big G they posted 286-3. On a wicket like that, was not a huge total and it would be how Warley set about it.

Big G decided to open the batting with Ben Atkinson, the idea was to try and get the team off to a flier, and we were 0-1 off 3 balls, Big G playing a Yorker into the ground and then it bouncing up and removing the off bail. Dave Womersley was next in and he stayed in until the 18th over and was out for 10ish he was run out (I think). Ben Atkinson scored a magnificent 35 his highest score ever, punishing all the bad balls for 4 and was excellent; I expect big things from this 12 year old.

Rooney, Hiney and last minute stand in, Blousey were out for 15 combined, it wasn’t what was needed; however, with the crowd dwindling Liam Keywood and Liam Turner provided some late entertainment with a thrilling 25 and 24 not out. Smashing the Blackley bowlers, it was great fun. Both Fathers looked on with some pride, Keywood played straight and played some excellent shots, which made Cone head happy. T’nip got the right leg out of the way and nearly carried all the way for 6 and we realised, his dad shed a little tear and exclaimed “that’s my boy”

Warley lost, but there was hope for the future.

Bradshaw V Warley 13/07/08

Hello everyone! This is a welcome return for the Sunday section match report not as welcome as the return of the Sunday Section skipper Alan “Big G” Sutton to Lead the Warley warriors in their next game of a truncated (triple word score in scrabble!) league season. Sutton’s returned made the average age of the team up to a huge 19.18 with the pit bull and Big G making up 75 of the 211 year between the 11. Sutton, along side Tabraiz Hassan was the tallest by a clear 4 inches.

So with that said, with the loss of Coe Byrne to St Peters, Sufi Mahboob to Tesco and Marcus Benson to a crippling knee injury that will keep him out for a while, Sutton Welcome Brad Sutcliffe, Ben Atkinson on Saturday evening and Matthew Whitworth Sunday morning, which Big G was hugely appreciative about. We set off to face Bradshaw in need of points, the wicket was dry and looked slow and low and that’s what it was. The outfield was erm, interesting, a little like a cow field due to recent rain, especially at extra cover, at both sides of the square, Sutton decided with an in experienced 11 he wouldn’t put a catcher in at slip, and went for an extra man in the covers, Dom Oates was keen to field at point, so it seemed only fitting he was put in at extra cover, for the first over………..and second over and every over after that. He was happy as a pig in mud………

Anyway, their openers were pinned down by some excellent bowling by Tabraiz and Shuqi but with very short boundaries straight or behind square whichever way you look, there were 4’s and with the best efforts from Smiler Keywood and Scholesy they went past, anyway, the more dangerous opener and captain Eckers was lured by Shuqi into an attempted BOOOOOMING drive and nicked it to the tumbling Womersley, the catch didn’t need a dive, his knee gave way again.

2 overs Later Shuqi got another nick and Boycs somewhat less of a meal of that one, 30-2. With an attack not brimming with experience Big G gave Tabs and Shuqi a break with a view to bringing them back later at the “death”. Liam “Smiler” Keywood came for a bowl, the 13 year old bowled with intelligence belying his age and his father, mixing up quicker deliveries with cutters, and slower balls. He yorked their dangerous number 4 batter, Shahzad bowling from the other end with pace and line and length, he induced an uppish drive from their number 3 or 5, I can’t remember, and it was spilled his brother Tabraiz.

Liam bowled his 4 overs and Shahzad bowled their 4 and 5 over spells respectively and on came James “Cerys” Whitworth and Ben Atkinson for a chuck, James bowled fantastically with control and variation in his spell of 9-1-22-1 bowling someone middle stump and creating pressure that caused a run out when trying to take 2 to cover, there isn’t 2 to scholsey not on any cabbage patch, he also can thank Smiler for saving 5 runs with almost the best catch I have ever seen, at long off, he ran 5 yards to his left, lept 2 yards in the arm and almost took the catch one handed, it would have been awesome, one frankly, his father would have “traffic copped” for 6. Ben was unlucky, he bowled 4 overs and had 2 dropped catches, Big G failing to hold a sprinting (well, sprinting for big g) and diving catch and also Tabraiz had a chance to redeem himself after dropping a catch off his own flesh and blood, had a simple chance to redeem himself, however, was so casual to this skier, he could have had a cup of tea, sandwich (veggie of course) and a cake, however, he spilt it.

Liam was brought back on and finished with 7-1-22-2 which was a fabulous effort from the young man, leaving Shuqi to come back on with 4 wickets left, he mopped 3 and Tabsy weighed in with one, leaving Shuqi with another 5 wickets. His second 5 wicket haul of the season, and bowling a team out for 142 for the first time this season.

At tea, there was reason to be happy, less so for the Old man of the team, as Sutton asked the pit bull to open the batting for him with young Batky, needing a solid start, and things looked good until the weary old man nicked one behind, thus bringing in Dominic Oates who was given a rather harsh looking LBW, Dom may also have got some bat onto that.

This brought Big G to the party, and with pressure he got 7 and was out again, caught at cover from a leading edge AGAIN! Annoyed AGAIN! And in came shuqi who added to his 5 wickets with an excellent 48 not out, Ben Atkinson showed the captain how to bat, presenting a full face getting 18 (I think, I never saw the book) batted very nicely and things could be good for this young man.

This brought in Liam Keywood who batted very well also and supported Shuqi very well, as did Scholesy, however both fell, again they were both very impressive in the field, with ball (in Liam’s case) and with the bat, however, with the mud around, their Mum’s may have something to say about the state of their whites!! Chinky was number 8 and both he and shuqi manoeuvred the bowling round nicely and a win looked possible, however chinky was bowled needing 28 off 24 balls, and Brad was unfortunate to be caught and bowled first ball. Shame really. Shahzad was number 10 and Big G thought if he could fire, a victory could be ours however, after a fantastic straight 4, he got a full toss on leg stump with no-one at midwicket, he skewed it in the air and was caught, Tabraiz was then bowled, leaving Shuqi on 48 and Warley were out for 126 a loss of 16 runs.

This was a tremendous effort from the young team, however, the more experienced heads, in particular Big G’s let them down and that should be a game we had won.

However, there was one huge question with regards to the supporters that watched the game, where would the allegiances of a new recruit S. Charnley lay, the recruit from Bradshaw, would he be at Bradshaw? Or would he be at Warley watching the Crossley shield semi final??? The answer? Triangle. Cheers Lad.

KEYWOOD STARS IN WARLEY WALLOPING

25th May is a date when great things happen, Liverpool won their 5th European cup which they have kept (have that blousey), 1895 Oscar Wilde was found guilty of indecency, 1973 British Honduras changed its name to Belize and of course 1953 Gordon Richards, British champion jockey 26 times was knighted and finally English Navigator James Cook sets off on his first voyage to explore the Antipodes………..and speaking of First voyages, this is the date Gregg Keywood became a man (in a cricketing sense of course, though, quite what happened on Saturday night is anyone’s guess, the filthy stop out) Gregg scored a magnificent 109 not out off 89 deliveries with 18 4’s and 2 6’s. And also weighed in with 2 wickets. A Genuine all round talent.

The day started with pressure on Sutton as there was no-one in the tea hut so we needed to win the toss, and win it we did and Warley were batting, Sutton asked Dave Womersley and Dominic Oates to open the batting against a youthful looking opening attack and a part female one. The pit bull looked to attack from the first ball and him and Dom swapped singles until Dom was cleaned up by a girl. That’s right a girl. Bowled by a girl.

This brought Coe Byrne to the crease, both were keen not to suffer a similar fate to Dom, who was bowled by a girl, did I mention this?? And they were very dismissive of the bowling latching on to anything short, particular savage was the Pit Bull who carved several boundaries through the leg side. However, on the score of 60-1 Coe tried to lift the ball over point and was caught, and this brought Sutton to the crease, fresh from his 50 for the second team, Womersley took his personal tally onto 40 until he took once chance too many and was caught, it was an excellent knock from the Pit Bull, fuelled by a real fire.

With Dom (bowled by a girl), Coe and the pit bull in the hutch and Warley precariously position on 72-3 Gregg and Sutton took the attack to some interesting bowling rattling up 139 in 20 overs, Sutton scoring 59 with 9 4’s and 1 6 off 66 deliveries, Keywood and Sutton survived a dropped catch each and feasted on some generous bowling, Shuqi came hit a 6 and a 4 and then Stef came and watch Gregg score his magnificent hundred and took Warley to an impressive 274-5 off 45 overs.

Queensbury started their innings facing only 8 men as 3 of the Warley Warriors had decided to go for a drive and were late, Sutton was not amused, anyway, Marcus Benson opened the bowling with Gregg Keywood, one bowled with nagging accuracy and the other with pace and movement, both caused problems, Greggggg getting 2 wickets both bowled with that extra yard of pace being too much for both batters.

In came their number and he made it a war of attrition and to be honest, there are no words that can make this interesting at all. Tabraiz and Shuqi came on for a bowl as they were late and took a wicket each. And Tabsy’s “little” brother Shahzad Hassan and James “Cerys” Whitworth came on for a bowl and took a wicket each which was Shahzad’s first in senior cricket. Cerys was dispatched for 3 sparkling boundaries by the girl who bowled Dom Oates…

With 10 overs to go and 140 needed, Dom Oates was given the chance of redemption however he couldn’t bowl a man out, like the girl that bowled him out. Though he didn’t get a break through he bowled well and provided Sutton something to think about with regards to future. However, the highlight of the second innings was Stefanos, relieved of wicket keeping duties to give Coe some practice for his second team game the day after, pleaded with Sutton for an over, The captain gave him his opportunity to bowl and he marked his run up like a professional, Stef or the Halifax Express as he is now know, bowled the first 2 deliveries on the spot, however, that was as good as it got, the next 2 deliveries bounced 4 times before getting to the batsmen, and the next delivery went backwards......The writer is still chuckling at the memory of this. Del boy falling over in the bar, The John Cleese walk in Fawlty Towers, Ricky Gervais’s dance in the Office or The Saint singing about black bin bags, this moment was up there. Those who were there know what I mean. Anyway, the over inexplicably only went for 3, but he was off and the chance was offered for Gregg “Freddy Flintoff” to add to his tally.

Even the skipper had a chuck and it went for 13, but the game was over and it was great performance by everyone.

Apart from those who were late for the second innings, that wont be tolerated again. Ever.

Oh, and did I mention how dom was out?????

Sunday 18/05/08

A trim looking Alan Sutton’s reign as Sunday Section skipper kicked off with defeat to Lightcliffe 3rd XI at Paradise Lane, having loss the toss Warley were asked to field, on a firm and unhelpful looking strip, with the temperature mild at best, Sutton was happy to field first as “I wouldn’t fancy catching a grape in this weather, nevermind a cricket ball” he remarked.

Sufi Mahboob opened the bowling from the school end, with his trousers long and muddied, and second ball was hit for a very classy cover driven 4 by N Pyrah with a dodgy knee who scored 28 the other opening bowler Tabraiz Hassan who’s trousers were as tight as Mick Holroyde and twice as creased, who bowled with pace, movement taking 2-36 off his 9 overs he deserved more, however he accounted for both openers who fell to excellent catches by Stef “DCMD” Brearley.

This brought in Ken Booth at number 3 an obdurant and eccentric left hander who anchored the innings with 40 and Powe at number 4 who was given a life on 14 when dropped by Sufi (which I am sure was unrelated to the length of his trousers) took advantage of this by feasting on some full bowling on an unhelpful pitch for the bowlers, launching 9 4’s and 2 6’s in a total of 52, On came Gregg Keywood who gave Booth all numbers of problems, Rowe tried to attack Keywood, however, Sutton had put both men out straight and after some blistering straight hits, he went to the well once to often and lofted a catch towards the slimline Skipper and he gobbled like a mars……..pork p……um a stick of celery.

Shuqi Mahmood came on into the attack at 114/3 with 22 overs to go, there was a lot of weight on his shoulders, with a tough situation to get his teeth into and he bowled his 9 overs tightly, there was no buffet bowling and he took 5/25 off 9 overs including 2 catches for Dominic Oates and smart caught and bowled. Shuqi bowled in tandem with James “chinky” Whitworth who bowled well yet his figures didn’t do him any justice, neither did his captains field, however, we live and learn.

Lightcliffe benefited from some contributions from Hemingway 49 not out and Powe 18.

A combination of the impressive Keywood, Sufi, Tabraiz and Marcus Benson tied up the innings leaving lightcliffe with 244 all out. If truth be told Warley gifted Lightcliffe too many extras and too many in the field which proved costly and a score of 150-170 would have been far more realistic.

Warley’s turn to bat came Sutton went in first with Dominic Oates, Oakland was given the new ball for Lightcliffe bowling left arm over, this caused Sutton no problems hacking 2 boundaries in the first over, and repeating the dose in the 3rd over as so impressively pictured by Blousey, However, Suttons innings of 22 came to an abrupt end when he tried to flick the ball through the leg side and got a leading edge as the ball straightened late, it was a ball that would have got Don Bradman out I swear! Leaving Oates in, he had been dropped twice in his innings of 5, and sadly the 3rd chance he gave was the clincher and a promising 38/0 was soon 38/2.

It was upto Coe Byrne and Sufi to rebuild the innings for Warley however, Coe was caught behind on 5 which brought GART Gregg Keywood to the crease, and he and Sufi set about rebuilding the total, however disaster struck when Gregg called for a single and him and Sufi stuttered and stammered like a Scatman John lp with a scratch in it and Sufi was run out.

In strode Dave Womersley and him and Gregg attempted for a third time to rebuild the total, With Dave’s defence and Gregg’s attack flair, they put on 24 runs Gregg in particular playing the off spinner Powe with aplomb and then Womersley, attempting to push the scoring on, got a top edge to the spinner giving him a catch.

This then brought Stef DCMD Brearley to the crease, and AGAIN they went about rebuilding the total, not with quick running or strong defence, but they were using rock and roll, Gregg particular being savage to anything over pitched, and then Gregg went to pull a short one, it hit both pads, his glove and his right butt cheek and trickled on to the stumps, it was a fine 31 and an unlucky way to get out.

Stef trying to add impitous to the total was out next over when he found the fielder with a pull stroke, Shuqi, Tabraiz and James Whitworth added a couple of boundaries however it was in vain. Warley scored 138.

Had Warley been tighter in the field, this game would have been closer.

Anyway, onwards and upwards to the next game against Queensbury.

 Thanks

 I P Freely
