Warley V Copley 10/05/09 Sunday Section
On a cold and
damp May Day at Paradise Lane, Warley entertained Copley in the second
league game of the season, from the team that played against Outlane,
Martin Kelly and Neil Lambert Crete and promotion to the second team
respectively, Sutton welcomed Ben Atkinson and Greg Keywood to the
fold. After taking the new covers off the wicket, Sutton won the toss
(again) unsure of what to do, he decided to have a bat.
With a line up
of 1 u-13, 3 u-15’s and 4 u-17’s Shuqi, a 30 year old Sutton and a
Womersley, the team wasn’t brimming with experience. Sutton sent Dom
Oates and Dave Womersley to get a similar start to Outlane and held
himself back for Lambert Role, with 5 on the board, Seraj persuaded
Dom to play across the line out and chip a catch to mid wicket. This
sent in Greg at 3. At the other end, the Wicket Keeper’s not in the
least bit irritating son, Dale, wearing the sweat bands of Roger Smith
and Glasses of Roy Orbison, he got one through Dave Womersley’s
defences and Warley were wobbling at 10-2.
In came Ben
Atkinson, he and Greg took the score up to 20 odd when Ben was foxed
by Seraj and was bowled. In came Matty Turner, he and greg punished
the bad ball and took the score up 70 when Matty was plumb LBW for 17.
In came the newly promoted Cerys, and he and Greg scored another 15,
when Greg on 48 was given a rotten LBW decision, that just purely
couldn’t have straightened enough however, the book shows he was out
so he had to trudge off. And at 7 in came Warley’s very own Landlord
Alan “Rigsby” Sutton.
Sutton was off
the mark with a square cut 4 and he and chinky set about rebuilding
the total however, after a couple of lofted shots over mid on, Chinky
found midwicket and was caught. Now, with the score of 102-6 and with
18 overs left, in came our very own Smiler Liam Keywood. Their captain
seemed very happy to give Liam the strike, and Rigsby was also keen to
give Liam the strike, and these 2 advanced the score to 180, Liam
scoring a tremendous 23 and Sutton getting to his 50, he was caught of
a huge no ball but that was the only chance he gave.
With 4 overs to
go, Copley brought an off spinner on, and though a full toss was
smashed back at him and he caught it, no-one was more surprised about
this than him! And that spelt the end of Liam, however, Sutton had a
better idea, with 3 overs to go, Sutton and Shuqi at 9, exchanged
singles, and with 2 overs to go, Warley were on 192-7, Sutton then
Launched an assault on the bowler, hitting a couple of boundarys
through cover, and then making sure the scorers were on their toes by
hitting a 6 through the score board window! Shuqi was bowled in the
last over for 3, and in came t’nip who bludgeoned a few and got 3 not
out. Warley got 221-8 Sutton ending up with 79 not out, 2 more then
our chairman with that same role!
Tea came and
went, and delicious it was too, thanks Oatesy!
And it was
Copley’s turn to bat now, Sutton asked Greg to open from the school
end and Matty to come up the hill and face Seraj and the other opener,
the innings didn’t start so well, it turned out that Seraj is a former
Bradford league paid professional and used to play at Brighouse when
they were “good”. To say Seraj was a little bit good for our league
was an understatement, and after 10 overs, Copley were 68-0 and after
Greg had bowled his allocation, Sutton remembered this time after over
bowling Matty last time, and brought on Liam Keywood, Liam took the
pace off the ball and Seraj found this tougher to hit, with a single
taken, Liam then got one to nip back and bowl their other opener
(Richard) for 34.
Seraj reacted
by welcoming the new bowler, Shuqi by smashing him for 14 off his
first over, however, Liam did sterling work keeping the runs down and
Sutton decided to give Seraj as little strike as possible. The other
batter was out LBW I think, I cant remember, and in came their skipper
and keeper, who proceeded to knock the ball to midwicket, Sutton
underarmed the ball to liam turner backing up and then the keeper
decided there was a run there!!! Its safe to say, there wasn’t. They
were 3 down now, 4th came and went LBW to shuqi, the ball
trapped in his pad, it was like the umpires very own hawkeye!
At 138-4 with
20 overs left and the game was still in there hands. Seraj has 96,
other opener got 34, and they had 138. I am not saying they were one
man team, but dissension was growing from the sidelines such as “play
on a proper team, this is a joke etc” were echoed by Sutton, and then
Shuqi did the unthinkable, he bowled a leg cutter and seraj didn’t get
it and it was caught by Chinky at cover and NOW it was game on. Next
ball our bespectacled friend, who had been rabbiting on tried to smash
the ball first up and only found Matty turner, 2 in 2 balls and the
game was turning!
Their number 8
came in and he was brutal on things short outside off stump and he was
out, cant for the life in me remember how I think he was caught off
Liam Turner who bowled the last 3 overs very very well. And the last
lad was bowled by Matty turner and Warley won by 18 runs
A real good do!

Warley Sunday Section V Outlane (away 26/04/09)
A new Season, a new division and a new sense of excitement for the start of the year until the
fixture secretary blessed us with a trip to outlane with a chilly breeze and a constant drone from
the M62 this ground is not the best.
With cry offs from Richard Jones, Suffy and Shahzad, Rigsby welcomed Liam Keywood and
Liam Turner into the team, the returning Martin Kelly, refreshed with stories of infamy about
Rigsby from our resident committee member Stef Brearley, And a debuting Matthew Turner from
Tringle. Al won the toss and decided to bat on decent looking wicket and asked Dominic Oates
and Dave Womersley to open, who started the innings with a steady tempo, Dom put the bad
ball away with some panache on his way to 39, "Boycs" defying his nickname with a towering 6
and a 4 on his way to 21, Dom was first out on 39 lbw. This brought in Kels, and kels went soon after.
This brought in the current mallard incumbent Alan Sutton, the trophy pride of place in his
lounge, and it will stay there on that evidence. 73-0 went to 83-4 Dom, Kels, Al and then Boycs
and Matty Turner found square leg to make it 5 down.
In came Neil Lambert, Chair, Hero, Legend. He and Liam put on 40 or 50 Liam looked calm and
composed and Neil was savage on anything short. Liam was out, unsure how I was fetching a 6
that Neil had hit, and this brought in shuqi, who was out caught behind and in came the unhappy
Cerys who was batting 9, he and Neil brought the total to a magnificent 199 before chinky was
ran out and in came Liam Turner who smashed a straight 4 and left one to make it to 207 -8.
I think everyone was happy with that, Teas were consumed and every morsel was savoured,
it had to be, there wasn't so much.
Liam Keywood and Shuqi opened the bowling, Liam struggled coming down the hill for line
and length and Shuqi struggled to walk after 6 overs due to cramp or a muscle strain unsure
which. Anyways, their opener smashed his way to 80 odd he gave Chinky the treatment and no
mistake. However, at 90-0ish the other opener was out, caught behind of chinky by Ron Weasley.
Neil then took 2 wickets in an over despite stiffening up whilst still bowling!! Matty Turner came
on and took a couple, and chinky changed ends and got some wickets, it wasn't enough though,
Outlane won by 3 wickets with 3 overs left. Sutton ruing a lack of a strike bowler.
A special mention goes to Liam turner who bowled magnificently with no
luck.
Ah well, on to bigger and better things.
